Top winter sun destinations in Greece

Leave the cold weather and winter coats behind and go in search of some winter sunshine

When considering the gloomy, grey weather and increasingly low temperatures of a British winter, the low price of single trip travel insurance and the short flight times of trips to continental Europe, it is hardly surprising that many Brits are waving goodbye to their hats, scarves and gloves and heading to glorious Greece in search of some winter warmth. Whilst we all know that the Greece and the Greek islands are popular during the summer months, they also make for a fantastic holiday destination throughout the rest of the year.

If you have just booked your single trip travel insurance for a long weekend then perhaps the best place to visit would be Athens. Flights to the capital are frequent and inexpensive and here you will be able to enjoy one of the warmest winter city breaks available in Europe. For a slightly longer stay, however, Thessaloniki offers an equally lively alternative to Athens. If you're interested in history and culture then Thessaloniki has lots to offer, especially in terms of its ancient heritage. By taking a stroll through the city you'll be able to take in sights such as the White Tower – the iconic symbol of the city that was originally part its defences – the Arch of Galerius, the Rotunda and a host of beautiful Byzantine churches. The Archeological Museum and the museums of Photography and Contemporary Art are also great places in which to spend an afternoon.

Thessaloniki is also a great place to while away the hours watching the world go by, as the city is home to countless cute little cafés and eateries. The best places to go to relax with a cup of coffee are either the picturesque seafront or the central square – Platia Aristotelous. Life isn't always led at a relaxed pace, however, because as the sun goes down Thessaloniki truly comes to life. This city is known for its fabulous night life – whether you're out for a quiet family meal, a few drinks in a hip bar or want to dance the night away in a club, there's something here for everyone. Food lovers in particular will enjoy a break in Thessaloniki, as the city is well known for the many culinary delights it has to offer.

The Greek islands also make for great winter sun resorts, one of the best of which has to be Rhodes. Said to have been born from the union of a Sun God and a nymph, Rhodes is an ancient island steeped in legend and ancient myth and is known to have been inhabited for thousands of years. Consequently the island is rich with culture and history and perhaps the best place to absorb this is in the beautiful old Rhodes town. Not just crammed with pretty cobbled streets and sights of interest, Rhodes town was also once home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world – the giant bronze Colossus of Rhodes. If you prefer sun bathing to sight seeing, however, then Lindos might be your perfect winter sun destination. Located down the coast from Rhodes town, Lindos is an impossibly picturesque little coastal town, popular for its fabulous weather and wealth of Greek hospitality. As is typical of the island, Lindos too has its fair share of history, as can be seen by a stroll (or donkey ride) up to the ancient acropolis.

Other great Greek destinations which make for perfect places to write down on your single trip travel insurance form are Paphos, Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol in Cyprus, Tsilivi in Zakynthos and St Stephano in Corfu.
